When considering this, we need to look at ourselves and our loved ones. We may not be a glutton or over-eater personally. Could it be that in a misguided form of love, we are enabling those dear to us to be gluttons?

Over-eater Social Studies
There are a number of social studies on eating too much.
Gluttony should not be confused with and is not necessarily a part of being overweight. One of the patients in my care as a nurse had tried everything and could not lose her post pregnancy weight.
Finally a doctor discovered the problem. She was not eating enough. Upon eating several full meals a day the pounds started to fly off. A total of 50 pounds came off. The problem, psychologically and economically she could not handle all the eating. She went back to barely eating and putting the weight back on.

Most of the definitions include eating to excess.
It is interesting that many of the definitions also included religious connotations. One included that it is one of the Deadly Sins.
Another definition associated it with a lack of self control.
Yet another with intemperance. Temperance is restraint, moderation, and especially in yielding to ones appetites or desires.
Basically enjoying more than enough when your family gets together is not on its own gluttony. Socially, many cultures will have times when people overindulge.
It is when it becomes habitual that it is gluttony. It is when we regularly eat more than our body requires for daily nutrition that we are over eating. It is when the excess food we eat is basically waste, literally going to our waist that we have a problem.
So first, the primary overeating cause is a lack of self control.
Overeating and Science
From a scientific standpoint, our stomach is the size of our fist. Once we eat that much, we have eaten enough to satisfy our needs. Our stomach can however expand to three times that size.
Since this is part of our design, the hard wiring of our brain, where does getting stuffed at a family meal end and gluttony begin? The answer is in the definition. If the gluttony or over eating cause is a lack of self control or lack of moderation in yielding to ones appetites and desires and one additional component. There is a habitual aspect that takes it beyond just getting stuffed during the holiday season.
There is more.
One study even found that there is a relationship with addictive behavior. Food, although essential for health and life, when mixed with a lack of self control, in effect becomes a drug.
It is interesting that there is evidence that for some, the overeating experience actually releases a euphoria feeling. That feeling, similar to the high of a drug addict, is the driving force that continues the addiction.
Consider it as illustrated by drinking alcohol. A person could get drunk but not be considered a drunkard. If that person then has a pattern of getting drunk habitually, then the problem will get a label.
Likewise, with alcoholism. A person can regularly have a drink and not be dependent on drinking alcohol. However, when dependence enters the picture, then there is a disease process with characteristic traits that are part of the process.
Alcoholics are not necessarily drunks or prone to drunkenness.
Overeating or gluttony is similar. Once over indulgence becomes habitual, it has become like an addictive disease just as alcoholism takes over someone.
Just as an alcoholic does not need to be drunk all the time or drink all the time, someone who is an over eater or gluttonous does not need to be eating all the time. They can restrain them selves until they can indulge in private.
Names that are less prejudicial are emerging but they do not change the underlying challenge faced by those afflicted by this malady. One such clinical name for gluttony is Loss of Control Over Eating.

Just like bulimia nervosa, the insatiable overeating, it is a psychological or maybe even medical condition. Actually, science only agrees on one thing about this. It all relates to a lack of the most basic of human abilities, self control.
There are so many theories being proposed, many with sound evidence from high level studies, that the consensus is that loss of control over eating is potentially a number of different addictions and afflictions. There are numerous combination's that can affect each of us differently.
There is an underlying basic psychological principle as to the cure.
Over eating can be managed by learning self control. No drugs, no diets, it is just that simple. Alcoholics do it, drug addicts do it, and over eaters can do it too. It starts and ends with self control.
It starts with admitting that we have a problem. Once facing up to that and openly admitting it, we can start the healing process.
Once admitting that there is a problem, the next step is overcoming it.
