The 10,000 Hour Rule: Does Practice Makes You Expert?

Malcolm Gladwell in the 2008 book Outliers suggests that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert.

The examples he points to are Bill Gates who started coding in his teens and the Beatles playing 8 hour gigs when they first started.

The key to their success was practicing early and practicing often.

This points to the nurture vs nature argument. Even if we are born geniuses, being able to use it is not so much dependent on our genes, it is dependent on wearing out our jeans practicing and learning.

On Reddit Gladwell further clarified his theory. It does not apply to sports. And practice will not always predict success. To be a grand master takes more than just practice.

Cal Newport in "So Good They Can't Ignore You," says that incredibly successful people are so successful because they are experts at practicing. They constantly and consistently grow their skill sets. If you're not growing, your plateauing. The only way you will keep getting better is by constantly pushing yourself to grow beyond your comfort level. This growth needs to be constant and never ending.

Get Almost Free Publicity and Public Information. Almost free because you will have to spend some time. Do you want tons of free publicity as a professional speaker? Would you like news papers and TV shows knocking on your doors?

For me, PR stands for Press Release

Do you want your Press Release put in front of thousands at a click of a mouse? Once you get our tutorial on how to write a press release you will need to get it published. One great way to promote yourself as a professional speaker is through using press releases.

Using press releases, in addition to visitors to my web site, I got a call from a newspaper writing a story of which I was one of the only experts on. This in turn lead to visitor to my site. Which is the next thing you should consider.

Your Own Web Site is an excellent way to market yourself.

Not only can you advertise yourself, you can also create multiple streams of income.

That is if you build a website based on the time tested theory of how the web is won. At this writing, my Alexa ranking is in the 500k range and occasionally I go into the top 100,000. There are sites that have spent tens of thousands of dollars and rank in the 3,000,000 range. For your reference, Google is number 1. The closer to one the better.

Why is this site successful? The simple CTPM principle. Read about it for free (sorry but you have to subject yourself to a long ad) and learn how to build a site that sells.

If you want to be a successful professional speaker I would recommend having your own site. I would only recommend going into it if you plan to put the work to make it a successful site.

Other Ways to Make Money on the Web

One way of making income that I use is Google Adsense words where you get paid every time people click on the ads on your site. You can control the content so they won't compete with your site if you don’t want them. Find out more at...

Another way is affiliate marketing. You get paid for marketing other peoples products.
