Custom tailored to fit the audience
The above all help to answer the question, 'How do I motivate in my speech, talk, or presentation?"
To fulfill the needs of the adult learner, in addition to talking to their listening style, they need to know what's in it for them. This requires tailoring the style of reaching out to and moving the audience toward the best motivational type that fits their needs. This could be based on the demographics or socio-economic factors of the audience. If you accomplish this, the majority will accept, buy into and make your words their own.
For instance, in the book The Innovators Solution, Clayton Christenson talked about how leaders of companies can get management to buy into a new concept by framing it as a threat. The end behavior, buy into the new idea, was accomplished by threat framing.
Once the idea was accepted and supported by management, the CEO could then switch to framing the same concept as an opportunity. Now managers would run even faster and further as studies showed.
First, understand that not everyone can be moved. We can move all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but never all of the people all of the time.
Physiological needs Behavioral responses programmed from youth, arousal (involving the physiological and psychological states initiated from the brain stem, the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system), which would include fight or flight response, addictions, and sex.
Spiritual needs can be divided into two sub groups. One need is spiritual in the religious sense. The other relates to the life force or the needs of the spirit within us.
The religious type of motivator is perhaps the most overlooked because many scientists are evolutionist and will tend to discount spirituality.
The Purple Triangle perhaps best illustrates it. The Purple Triangle is the patch designation of a group that successfully withstood Nazi tyranny. All they had to do to obtain freedom is sign a document denouncing their faith as Jehovah’s Witnesses. Instead, they refused to be a part of the atrocities that cost lives and imprisoned others in concentration camps.
A second type of spiritual need is related to the meaning of the word spirit or life force.
Think of a spirited horse, or a person who has lost his/her inner needs, desires and resolve that make us who we are. The most important of spiritual needs is moral excellence.
This is based on a properly trained conscience. It means not doing something or doing something because it is the right thing to do rather than being concerned about and fearing the outcome.
Certain needs such as caring for elderly parents and personal goals would also be included. Qualities like loyalty are included here.
The spiritual need can be destructive as in the case of Bobby Sands, who starved to death to make a political statement.
